Week 6 Commish's Picks

I've received several inquiries regarding the absence of Commish's Picks last week. For the record, the article was completed, but I ultimately decided against publication after discovering that several owners had begun treating my predictions as a substitute for independent thought. The League Office briefly considered implementing a mandatory competency examination before granting access to future articles, but preliminary testing suggested we would lose approximately three-quarters of our readership. I have therefore elected to resume publication without restrictions. Consider it an act of generosity, not an endorsement of your intellectual capabilities.

Week 6 offers the usual assortment of inflated expectations, questionable roster decisions, and teams desperately attempting to convince themselves that their current records are temporary misunderstandings. I've identified one matchup worthy of national attention and another that should probably be prohibited from appearing on television. Somewhere between those two extremes, an undefeated record may be tested, a longstanding rivalry may take an unexpected turn, and at least one owner will discover that optimism is not a recognized scoring category. My selections are complete, my confidence remains absolute, and I expect the usual complaints from those who confuse disagreement with expertise. Read carefully. I won't be explaining myself twice.

Gotham Rogues vs Cerebral Ballsy
LINE: Cerebral Ballsy -25
Our Game of the Week features two division leaders with a combined 9-1 record and enough recent history to make this considerably more interesting than the average SCL contest. Ballsy enters undefeated, atop the Power Rankings, and fresh off a 187-point performance that ranks among the ten highest scores in league history. The Rogues, meanwhile, have quietly assembled four consecutive victories and arrive with the distinction of having eliminated Ballsy from last season's playoffs, 91-57. I suspect Cerebral Ballsy remembers that humiliation. I also suspect the Rogues consider it one of the few transactions that didn't require negotiating with another team.
Both teams have benefited from stingy defenses, with Ballsy allowing just 81.0 points per game and the Rogues surrendering 88.8. The more meaningful difference is offensive production: Cerebral Ballsy averages 124.4 points per game compared to the Rogues' 100.2, and the Rogues haven't outscored Ballsy in a single week since the season opener. The oddsmakers have installed Cerebral Ballsy as a 25-point favorite, which strikes me as a rather odd assessment of the Rogues chances given those numbers.
However, the personnel situation makes this matchup considerably even less predictable. Ballsy will be without Aaron Jones, while the Rogues are missing Justin Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson, and Saquon Barkley. That's a substantial collection of talent unavailable for a game of this magnitude, although they may receive some relief with recently acquired A.J. Brown expected to return from injured reserve. And Thursday night's action has already given them a 25-point head start, thanks largely to 16 points from Seattle's defense. Cerebral Ballsy still has its entire lineup waiting to play, but there's something mildly satisfying about watching the league's second-highest scoring team begin the weekend trailing an opponent they're supposed to handle comfortably.
Then there's the September 26th trade between these two teams, which sent Tony Pollard to Gotham and the 49ers defense to Cerebral Ballsy. Pollard is projected for 14 points this week, while San Francisco is projected for eight. A six-point difference isn't particularly remarkable until you consider that these teams split their two regular-season meetings and that the Rogues' playoff victory last season was decided by 34. I've seen championships decided by considerably less than the value of a poorly considered trade. Should Pollard become the difference-maker, I expect both teams to explain why they won the deal. Should neither player matter, I expect them to explain that as well.
Ultimately, I believe Ballsy has too much offensive firepower to surrender their undefeated record, particularly with Jordan Love, Jonathan Taylor, and Kyren Williams leading the charge. But the Gotham Rogues have enough talent, momentum, and Thursday-night production to make this considerably closer than the projected spread suggests. I'm anticipating a contest that remains undecided well into Sunday, possibly requiring Monday night's 49ers defense to settle matters. And if the very defense the Rogues traded away ends up delivering Ballsy a sixth consecutive victory, I may have to rename Congenital Coliseum the Scene of the Crime. The Rogues should know better than to leave fingerprints on the weapon.
COMMISH'S PICK: Cerebral Ballsy

Baby Got Dak vs Uncle Bucky
LINE: Uncle Bucky -8
Welcome to a contest so thoroughly devoid of appeal that I feel obligated to warn the public. Our Blackout Game of the Week pits Baby Got Dak against Uncle Bucky, two teams sporting identical 1-4 records and remarkably different approaches to disappointment. Bucky has spent much of the season losing despite occasionally playing respectable football. Dak has eliminated the unnecessary step of playing respectable football.
Last week provided an especially revealing comparison. Uncle Bucky scored a season-high 133 points and still lost, while Baby Got Dak produced 34 points, the eighth-lowest score in league history. That's a 99-point difference between two teams that somehow arrived at the same record. Dak has averaged just 68 points over their last three games, all losses, and haven't outscored Uncle Bucky since Week 3. I've considered whether this qualifies as a rivalry, but rivalries generally require both participants to present some form of resistance.
The personnel situation offers little encouragement. Uncle Bucky will be without Sam LaPorta, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Malik Washington, while Baby Got Dak is missing Chase Brown and Rashee Rice. Fortunately, Aaron Rodgers and Christian McCaffrey remain available for Dak, although expecting them to rescue this operation seems unnecessarily cruel. Thursday night did provide a rare encouraging development when RJ Harvey scored 11 points against a projection of five. For a team that managed 34 points last week, that's nearly a third of an entire game's production before Sunday even begins. I assume celebrations are underway.
Uncle Bucky won the most recent meeting 114-78 and hold a 2-1 advantage in the regular-season series. With Jayden Daniels, Bucky Irving, and a collection of running backs that at least resemble a functioning lineup, I expect them to improve to 2-4. Whether anyone should feel particularly proud of defeating a team averaging 70.6 points per game is another matter entirely. I've instructed the League Office not to televise this contest, release highlights, or acknowledge its existence unless legally required. The Hatchet House will be open for business, but I recommend keeping the lights off. Some things are better left unseen.
COMMISH'S PICK: Uncle Bucky
Consolation Kings vs Los Perros Locos
LINE: Los Perros Locos -9
Twelve regular-season meetings between these two have produced a perfectly even 6-6 record, although Consolation Kings tends to win by considerably larger margins, apparently believing that defeating an opponent should also involve damaging their self-esteem. The Kings arrive having lost two straight, while Los Perros Locos has yet to lose a game outside their division this season. The dogs are missing Jalen Hurts and Tee Higgins, but Kenneth Walker III and a crowded backfield give Perros enough firepower to make life uncomfortable for a defending champion that's managed just 179 points over their last two games. I've studied the numbers, considered the injuries, and concluded that the Kings' recent difficulties are unlikely to improve at The Puppy Mill. The Kings may still wear the crown, but I suspect they'll be leaving with their tails between their legs.
COMMISH'S PICK: Los Perros Locos
Tortuga vs Golden Tate Warriors
LINE: Tortuga -8
Tortuga arrives at Tate's Retirement Retreat as an eight-point favorite, facing a Golden Tate Warriors team that hasn't won a game, hasn't won at home, and hasn't averaged enough points to frighten a competent high school debate team. On paper, this should be straightforward, but I've noticed the Warriors are without Joe Burrow while Tortuga is missing Ja'Marr Chase, and Emanuel Wilson has already given the visitors just six points on Thursday night. More importantly, I've long maintained that a team can only lose so many consecutive games before sheer statistical embarrassment begins demanding corrective action. I suspect this is the week the Warriors finally discover what the victory column is for. Tortuga may have arrived expecting a relaxing afternoon at the Retirement Retreat, but I have a feeling the Warriors are about to introduce their guests to an unexpected early checkout.
COMMISH'S PICK: Golden Tate Warriors
Badazz Bri vs MaxxCasulaties
LINE: MaxxCasualties -20
Badazz Bri has never lost to MaxxCasualties in the regular season, a distinction that sounds considerably more impressive until you realize they've only played twice. The Casualties enter as a 20-point favorite despite missing Jared Goff and Deebo Samuel, although replacing Goff with Patrick Mahomes hardly qualifies as an emergency. Bri, meanwhile, is relying on Josh Allen to compensate for a receiving corps that appears to have been assembled from the NFL's lost-and-found department, and I've noticed Evan McPherson is still occupying the kicker position despite having the week off. The Killing Fields seems an appropriate setting for what I expect to be the Casualties' first regular-season victory over Bri. I don't anticipate an actual massacre, but I've advised the grounds crew to keep the equipment running.
COMMISH'S PICK: MaxxCasualties
Deez Nuts vs Pork Chop Express
LINE: Pork Chop Express -12
Pork Chop Express has already put 46 points on the board Thursday night, while Deez Nuts has managed eight, including a single point from Courtland Sutton, whom they acquired from Cerebral Ballsy earlier this week. An impressive return on investment, assuming the investment was intended as a charitable contribution. More concerning is the Nuts' continued refusal to start a kicker, despite Cameron Dicker sitting comfortably on the bench and a potential forfeit looming if that position remains vacant. I've examined the history of this matchup and discovered that when the Nuts wins, they win by 16 points; when the Chops wins, they win by an average of 45.5. With the Pork Chop Express already rolling and the Nuts apparently operating without a full crew, I see no reason to expect a change in that arrangement. The Chops are leaving the station, and Deez Nuts may not have enough personnel to board.
COMMISH'S PICK: Pork Chop Express
Who Is You vs Fat Cats
LINE: Fat Cats -26
The Cats haven't defeated Who Is You since 2014, although I should point out that disappearing from the league for a decade is an effective way to preserve a losing streak. The Cats enter as a 26-point favorite, armed with Drake Maye, who has been the league's highest-scoring quarterback two consecutive weeks, while You is missing Jahmyr Gibbs and has resorted to its third quarterback of the season. On paper, this should be a comfortable afternoon for the Fat Cats, but I find it difficult to ignore a team that has won three straight meetings against them, including a one-point escape when the Cats returned in 2024. I've seen enough of this rivalry to recognize that logic has very little authority here, and I'm expecting another improbable You victory. After twelve years without a win against Who Is You, I suspect the only thing waiting for the Cats at the bottom of The Litter Box is another unpleasant surprise.
COMMISH'S PICK: Who Is You
Tallahassee Tator Tots vs Do Not Panic
LINE: Tallahassee Tator Tots -16
I've reviewed the history of this matchup, and I'm beginning to suspect Do Not Panic has a contractual obligation to lose to the Tallahassee Tator Tots. Four meetings, four defeats, and an average margin of 42.5 points—the closest Panic has ever come to winning was a 33-point loss in Week 2 of last year. The Tots arrive without Breece Hall, and Jaylen Waddle has already contributed a miserable two points Thursday night, but Panic will need more than a couple of fortunate developments to overcome a team that has historically treated it like a scheduled bye week. I expect the Tator Tots to extend their unbeaten streak against Panic to five games, although with a projected 16-point margin, this might finally qualify as a competitive matchup by their standards. At Composure Coliseum, I expect the home team to maintain its composure right up until the potatoes start mashing.
COMMISH'S PICK: Tallahassee Tator Tots
